Drive Performance with Micro-Learning
Tuesday, August 27th, 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m.
Michel Koopman, getAbstract
Employees need to stay informed about their work and maintain their skills, and the pressure to learn continuously in a limited amount of time is daunting. Some methods of training can discourage employee participation. Most often instructor-led or computer-based training occur for long hours in one central location and provide loads of information.
Micro-learning is a revolutionary shift in corporate and academic learning development. It’s an alternative to traditional methods, and it helps keep employees engaged. It narrows in on a single topic or concept. This is addressed within a limited length and in a manner that’s easy to consume on flexible platforms, such as the Internet, making it easy to learn while on-the-go. Online micro-learning tools, like getAbstract, are more readily available allowing people to learn anywhere and at any time. These tools allow businesses to track viewership, and the activities of their employees.
Micro-learning helps address immediate business needs within moments. For example, an executive taking a trip to China for meetings to solidify a business deal can learn about the core values that guide China’s people, how to sell products and services in China and the myths that persist about China in the West by reading the getAbstract summary, What Chinese Want: Culture, Communism, and China’s Modern Consumer.
In another example, a project manager dealing with extended, multifaceted and complex projects runs into issues either with stakeholders, pressure from government or the community. The manager can get a better grip of these problems by not divvying a project into components; instead, they can understand the interrelationships that exist among the parts by exploring the concept of “complex adaptive systems” within minutes using the getAbstract summary, Aspects of Complexity: Managing Projects in a Complex World.
Micro-learning incorporates learning activities into an employee’s daily routine better. Nuggets of insights are presented in more engaging ways than traditional practices. The advantages micro-learning provides include availability and accessibility. Employees learn while on-the-move, and they have more time and independence for their learning activities. Micro-learning moments improve the performance and effectiveness of an activity. The aggregate effect of these moments is long-term talent development for a person and for an organization.
Companies need to provide workers with trusted and powerful micro-learning assets to ensure the greatest productivity and employee engagement.
